Digital eye strain — also called computer vision syndrome — affects an estimated 65% of Americans who regularly use digital devices. Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck and shoulder pain.
The 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple habit dramatically reduces eye fatigue by giving your focusing muscles a break.
Optimize Your Workstation
- Position your screen 20–28 inches from your eyes
- The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level
- Reduce glare with anti-glare screen protectors or adjusting lighting
- Increase text size so you're not straining to read
- Match screen brightness to your ambient room lighting
Blink More
We blink about 15–20 times per minute normally, but that drops to 5–7 times per minute when using screens. This leads to dry, irritated eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink fully and frequently.
Consider Blue Light Lenses
Blue light filtering lenses can reduce digital eye strain, especially for evening screen use. Ask us about adding a blue light filter to your next pair of glasses.
